Levinsky Market

Food Tour

Between long-established delis, spice shops and newer places to eat, we’ll taste our way through Levinsky Market and get to know the people and stories behind its food.

I moved to the neighbourhood a few years ago, and the market still finds ways to surprise me. Between bites, we’ll discover how food traditions from Thessaloniki in Greece, Poland and Iran come together in one of Tel Aviv’s liveliest markets.

What are we tasting, and what’s the story?

There’s a lot of good food in Levinsky Market, and choosing our stops is honestly one of the hardest parts. I have my favourites, of course, but taste is only part of the decision. I also want to know who’s behind the food and how their story fits into the story of the market. So we’ll eat, chat with the people who run the businesses and, every now and then, look up from our plates to see what’s around us.

The market sits in Tel Aviv’s first purpose-built commercial neighbourhood, simply called “Commercial Centre”. The name pretty much says it all. The streets were laid out in a grid, each with its own trade, and Levinsky Street became the street for food. We’ll get to know the Jewish immigrant communities who established the market, and the people who arrived later and added something of their own.

I’m also interested in what’s happening here now. People still come to do their shopping, but increasingly they come to eat, drink and spend an afternoon. What does that change? You can see it in the shops, the food and the way people use the streets. We’ll talk about that too. And somewhere between bites, we’ll find out who Levinsky was and what future he imagined here.

What guests say

★★★★★

Delicious and fascinating food tour, led by Tal, who is a highly engaging, super knowledgeable and very friendly guide. She appears to know absolutely everyone in Levinski Market, with fascinating stories of stores, people and how multiple generations of families continue to bring life and vibrancy to the market and local area. The five of us had amazing food and drinks from Persia, Georgia, Japan and Israel, as well as an array of incredible Ashkenazi delicacies from Lupo. This tour is suitable for all ages and is highly recommended for anyone visiting Tel Aviv.‏
